WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)–The Laney girls basketball took the next step towards bringing home a state championships on Saturday. The Buccaneers beat South Central 55-35 in the 3rd round of the Class 4A state tournament.
Laney held the slim five point lead at the halftime break, but used a couple of big runs in the third quarter to pull away. Saniya Rivers could not be stopped down the stretch she finished with 25 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists in the win.
“We missed some layups early on in the first half, that we just couldn’t finish on. You know us making an 8-0 run or 10-0 run kind of depleted them and we used it for our momentum,”said Laney head coach Ashley Berting.
Laney will now have a rematch with Southeast Raleigh in the 4th round of the state playoffs. Last year Southeast beat the Buccaneers in the regional finals one game away from the state championship. Laney knows it will be a tough task going into an environment like Southeast Raleigh.
“I think that the fan pressure is going to be really hard and the ball pressure too. It is going to be really difficult, but I think we’ll be able to handle it,”said Laney senior Jennifer Jacobs.
Laney is riding a 28 game winning streak , with their only loss coming in the first game of the season to Jacksonville. The Bulldogs of Southeast Raleigh last lost back on January 11th to Leesville Road in overtime, so something will have to give on Tuesday night.
“There are going to be a few nerves with us, because you know were a younger team. Once we get going in the first quarter , we have to realize this is the time. We have to do our thing,”said Buccaneer sophomore Saniya Rivers.
Laney and Southeast Raleigh are set to tip-off at 6:00 P.M on Tuesday night from Raleigh.
