SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) — There’s talk about a new shopping center in the works and what’s possibly going in it.
Marshalls, Hobby Lobby, Ulta, those are some big names rumored to be heading to Shallotte, and we found out whether that’s actually the case.
Alex and Carolyn Moskowitz moved to Shallotte from New York City 26 years ago. When they first arrived, things looked pretty different.
“This was all farm land. Main St. was a two-way street. On Saturdays and Sundays you could shoot a cannon down the street and not hit anyone,” explained Alex.
The intersection at Smith Ave. and Main St. has businesses and shops on every corner, except one. There’s a proposal to build a large shopping center here.
Atlantic Retail created a flyer of what the shopping center could look like, but the company has confirmed, these businesses are not coming. While this shopping center does have a plan for more retail, some would like to see more variety in food choices.
“I would love to see some nice fine restaurants where you could go in and sit and enjoy a meal and have everything served to you instead of walking around,” said Carolyn, Alex’s wife.
“We’ve got almost every pizza company in the world down here and almost everything is fast food,” Alex added.
The Moskowitzes are a few of many northern transplants, several of whom are Jewish or Italian. The couple says those residents would love to be reminded of their northern roots with a deli or Mediterranean restaurant.
There are also rumors of a Chick-fil-a coming, but that’s also just a rumor. We will keep you updated on what happens next with the proposed shopping center as more details become available.
