WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW SPORTS) — UNCW junior infielder Cole Weiss was named Colonial Athletic Association Player-of-the-Week on Tuesday after he helped the Seahawks to a 4-1 week and a sweep of Siena over the weekend.
Weiss, who enters the week with a career-best eight-game hitting streak, hit .529 (9-17) for the week, scored seven runs and drove in 10. The Winston-Salem native doubled twice and belted his first career grand slam against Siena.
A preseason All-CAA pick by the league’s coaches, Weiss leads the Seahawks and the CAA with 23 runs batted in and ranks 12th nationally. He had a seven-game stretch halted on Sunday in which he drove in at least a run and had 18 RBI’s over that streak.
Through 17 games, Weiss is hitting .381 and has posted a .474 on base average. Last week he had at least two hits in four of the five games.
The Seahawks and Weiss host nationally-ranked North Carolina on Wednesday at 6 p.m. as the two programs conclude their annual home-and-home series at Brooks Field.
