ATLANTIC BEACH, NC (WCTI) — Two people drowned at Atlantic Beach on Tuesday.
Atlantic Beach Police Chief Jeffrey Harvey tells WCTI that around 1:30 pm., a “male juvenile” was caught in a rip current near Money Island Drive. The current carried him down to the Oceanana Pier where the authorities pulled him out of the water.
A man in his 20’s tried to help but was also swept out by the rip current. Authorities had to rescue him, too.
Harvey said the two were taken to Carteret Health Systems where they died from their injuries.
In two separate instances earlier this year, swimmers died while in the water at Emerald Isle, which is a little over 10 miles away from Atlantic Beach.
