WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — For the first time in 28 years there will be a new coach at the helm of UNCW baseball.
The change will begin next season, but the university made it official on Wednesday afternoon by introducing Randy Hood as the new UNCW head baseball coach. Hood becomes just the fourth head coach in the history of the Seahawk Baseball program.
Hood was a longtime assistant under Mark Scalf before receiving the promotion this spring after Scalf retired at the end of the 2019 season. Hood is entering his 19th season with the Seahawks after his time at Campbell University.
UNCW has had a ton of success since Hood became apart of the coaching staff. The Seahawks have made it to 10 NCAA Regionals since 2003, including this past season at Chapel Hill. Hood knows it won’t be easy replacing a guy like Mark Scalf, but if they do the little things right the success will follow.
“You’ll hear me say this a thousand times, but we have to do the little things,”said Hood. “If you can take care of those both on and off the field you will have big success.”
Hood takes over a UNCW team that will return eight out of their nine starting position players from last season, as well as most of the pitching rotation. The Seahawks finished with a 32-31 record in 2019, but won yet another Colonial Athletic Association tournament title.
