PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — For many of us, school cafeteria lunches were not the most appetizing nor were they very healthy, but now Pender County schools are bringing cafeteria lunches into the 21st century.
Each of Pender County’s traditional high schools has three cafeteria lines with multiple meal options.
There are custom made sandwiches or wraps, similar to Subway. Another station has traditional school lunch items such as burgers and chicken patty sandwiches. A third station has new weekly options, including Asian stir fry, tacos, barbecue, and Mediterranean.
“The goal is to increase our participation among students, making sure that they get a healthy meal that they want to eat, not one that they have to eat,” Aramark School Dining General Manager Vernon Tanner said. “This particular menu is Mediterranean, so our meat is marinated in those seasonings throughout the day and overnight.”
Tanner, who came up with the new meal plan, says all of their produce is fresh as well.
