NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY)– You may have seen some really creative parking spaces on Front Street in downtown Wilmington because it’s International Parking Day.
Wilmington Downtown Incorporated President, Edwin Wolverton says this idea started almost a decade ago in San Francisco.
He says the goal is to re-imagine how public parking spaces could be used to better serve the public.
He says it was a way for businesses and non-profits to transform spaces and promote social services.
“Downtown really is a place for everybody, and as we think about how much space is dedicated for cars, or for buses or for vehicles, that really chips away at some of the space that could be used for humans for other kinds of activities,” Wolverton said.
Wolverton says this is the organization’s eighth year doing this event.
