NEW HANOVER COUNTY — A man is in custody after allegedly stabbing a neighbor and leaving the man in serious condition.
Manuel Sanchez-Merino, 45, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. According to New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Jerry Brewer, Sanchez-Merino was charged in connection with a stabbing Wednesday night at the Royal Palms Mobile Home Park.
At about 9 p.m. Wednesday, deputies were called to the park at 5140 Carolina Beach Road. Brewer said that Sanchez-Merino and another man were fighting, and a neighbor intervened, saying he planned to call the police.
Sanchez-Merino and the other man separated and went back to their respective mobile homes. But Brewer said, Sanchez-Merino then confronted the other man on the man’s porch, stabbing him with a knife. The victim was able to hit Sanchez-Merino with a piece of wood.
Brewer said both men were transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. The victim, whose name was not immediately available, was in serious condition Thursday morning.
New Hanover County jail records indicate Sanchez-Merino was taken into custody Thursday morning at the hospital after being treated.
Sanchez-Merino is being held at the New Hanover County jail with bail set at $150,000. He is scheduled to make a court appearance Friday.
