WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — The Whiteville Fire Department is lighting up the night in memory of fallen firefighters.
Fire departments and other landmark buildings are lighting the sky red this week in honor of Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters. The event honors firefighters who died in the line of duty.
The Whiteville fire station, located at 120 East Columbus Street, was illuminated in red light Sunday night.
The department wrote on Facebook that this will continue each night through October 6 as it joins many other fire departments in “lighting our fire station red to remember the fallen.”
Whiteville Fire Chief David Yergeau says Light the Night officially started in 2017, but this is their first year participating.
Yergeau says this year, they are remembering almost a hundred firefighters who died last year, including a few from North Carolina.
The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation will sponsor a memorial in Maryland this weekend, where each fallen firefighter from the year before will be honored.
