WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — You either love it or hate it, but it’s coming this weekend, so you might as well get ready.
The IRONMAN Triathlon hits the water and the roadways Saturday bringing thousands of athletes to our area and they’ll all be sharing the road with you.
Elite athletes have been checking in all day at the Wilmington Convention Center, men and women from 49 states and 31 countries for Saturday’s big race.
Senior Regional Director Keats McGonigal says more than 3,000 athletes from across the world are expected to participate in the IRONMAN Triathlon.
They will do a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and a 13.1 mile half-marathon.
“We’ve got some athletes, who are out here, who are going to be super fast. We’ve got a lot of other ones who just want to make it to the finish line,” McGonigal said.
This is Floridian Lina Miller’s thirteenth triathlon in two years. Miller says she’s ready but with this many marathons, what does the preparation process look like?
“It looks like a 3 a.m. wake up, everyday, and it looks like a 2.5 hour workout every morning, and it looks like a 100 percent daily,” Miller said.
She says it keeps her spirits high.
“I feel like it brings me joy. I have a great support team. I have a fabulous workout team, and I don’t know,” Miller said. “It’s my rest, it’s my rest. it’s where I find peace.”
