WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington man was sentenced Thursday in a deadly 2017 shooting.
47-year-old Steven Barton was shot in the 1400 block of Hooper Street just after 6:30 a.m. on April 27, 2017. Barton died at the scene.
Officers say Jaquan Copeland and Eric Nathan Partin drove away from the scene. Both were charged in the shooting case. It was later determined Partin was the shooter.
“Steven was a beloved member of the homeless ministry in downtown Wilmington,” Assistant DA Connie Jordan said. “The exhaustive efforts of the Wilmington Police Department have brought justice in a case that would otherwise have no witnesses based on the location and timing of this crime. We thank them for their hard work and dedication.”
Partin pleaded to second degree murder and was sentenced to a minimum of 18-22.6 years in prison.
Copeland’s charges are still pending.
