WILMINGTON,NC (UNCW Release)–Redshirt senior defender Danny Reynolds became the second player in UNCW men’s soccer history to be selected in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft when he was chosen by reigning MLS champion Seattle Sounders FC in the second round of the annual event on Thursday afternoon.
Reynolds, the 35th overall pick, joined Colin Bonner and Daniel Roberts as former UNCW standouts to be selected in a Major League Soccer draft. Bonner was picked by FC Dallas with the 45th overall selection in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft while Roberts was tabbed by the Houston Dynamo in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft.
“I am honored to be selected by Seattle Sounders FC,” Reynolds said. “I can’t wait to get to work and I am just grateful they decided to place their faith in me and now, I need to repay them.”
Reynolds, the 2019 CAA Defensive Player of the Year, tallied three goals with five assists while starting 16 contests for the Seahawks this season. He led UNCW to a 3-2 victory over Delaware on Sept. 21 with the first two-goal game of his college career, including the game-winning marker in overtime.
In addition, the Shilton, England, product netted a goal in the Seahawks’ 3-1 win over Northeastern and contributed a pair of assists against Drexel in a 3-1 victory on Oct. 26.
A transfer from the University of Louisville, Reynolds fashioned five goals with eight assists in two seasons and started 26-of-32 games.
“I am delighted for Danny to be selected in the MLS draft by the current MLS champion Seattle Sounders,” UNCW Head Coach Aidan Heaney said. “He has worked extremely hard for this opportunity and I know he is ready to compete at the next level.”
Reynolds was one of two Colonial Athletic Association players to be selected in the first two rounds of the MLS SuperDraft on Thursday. James Madison senior midfielder Manuel Ferriol, the CAA’s Player of the Year, was taken by FC Dallas with the 40th overall pick.
The third and fourth rounds of the MLS SuperDraft will take place via conference call on Monday, Jan. 13.
