WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — One man is being treated at New Hanover Regional Medical Center after crashing into the Smith Creek.
Joseph Spencer’s family says he was driving down Castle Hayne Road when his tires began wobbling and he lost control.
His car ended up sideways in the water.
His family says Spencer managed to climb his way out of the car and up the bank.
They say he had dropped off his son with his grandma only minutes before.
“My son went off in the river and he was able to get himself out of there because today I would have lost a child if he couldn’t swim or he didn’t think fast,” Spencer’s mother Rachel White said. “And I thank God that he dropped the baby off and he didn’t go into the river with this baby because the baby would be locked up in the car seat. I’m just thanking God today that we are blessed.”
She says her son was complaining of neck and back pain, but he is expected to be okay.
