“You are not only the high school teacher of the year, but you are the New Hanover County School’s Teacher of The Year, and you get a car,” said a New Hanover County Schools Board Member.

It was a well earned congratulations for Educator Elizabeth Felts.

“I’ve never driven a new car before, so this is amazing,” Felts expressed.

She is no novice to teaching. The New Hanover High School educator has been running the classroom now for ten years.

Felts said her students are the main reason why she was able to earn such a prestigious award.

“That’s what wakes me up in the morning, that I’m driving to school to get to see their smiling faces. They are amazing and resilient and inspire me in so many ways and they deserve a great teacher, and so that’s what motivates me,” Felts said.

New Hanover County Schools presented Felts with a Teacher of The Year plaque, ring, glass apple, and a brand new Toyota Rav4.

Not too far away at Snipes Academy of Arts and Design, Principal Rachel Manning was awarded Principal of The Year. Manning said this is not her first one.

“I was principal of the year two different times when I worked with Pender County Schools, and I was also represented at the Southeast regional level,” Manning said.

Manning said she believed it is the selflessness that has kept getting her these awards.

“I believe it’s building the relationships with my staff, and my students, and my families. It helps build that solid foundation that we need to continue to move our school forward,” Manning said. “It’s all about the relationships, and it’s about the people that you bring on board with you that help and support you, and I have an amazing staff, and an amazing support system.”

There were also presentations at Castle Hayne Elementary and Holly Shelter Middle School.
