Report: SC officer struck person lying on the beach with patrol car

A 69-year-old Murrells Inlet woman was hit by an Horry County police car while lying on the beach in the Garden City area, according to an incident report released June 2.

South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) and South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) are investigating the incident.

In a report released by SCDPS, the incident happened around 10:32 a.m. on May 24 at the beach access point on Holly Avenue and S. Waccamaw Drive.

The officer told the SCHP trooper that he was pulling out on to the beach access, he looked both ways and thought it was clear.

“As he attempted to make a right turn he struck a pedestrian that was laying on the beach,” according to the report.
