CERRO GORDO,NC (WWAY)–Columbus County has become a hot bed for baseball over the years and now another local kid will have chance to play professionally. West Columbus High School senior Jagger Haynes was drafted on Thursday night in the 5th round of the 2020 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres.
The left-handed pitcher becomes the second player from Columbus County to be drafted by the Padres in the last three years. Whiteville High School product MacKenzie Gore was drafted by San Diego No.3 overall back in 2017.
Haynes made one start as a senior for the Vikings before the season was cancelled. In that start he threw six hit less innings, while striking out 13 hitters. The southpaw is committed to continue his education and baseball career at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
