NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office may be looking to fill a new position soon that could help to shorten prison time for some criminals.
The Sheriff’s Office will be applying for the Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants Program, a federal grant of $241,000 that will add a drug analyst position to the office.
The analyst will test drugs locally, according to Spokesman Jerry Brewer.
Brewer says the office is currently sending drugs to Raleigh to be tested.
He says this will vastly increase time in identifying drugs and will shorten time for some in jail because they won’t have to wait to determine what drug it is.
The New Hanover County Commissioners approved the office’s request to apply for this grant at Monday’s meeting.
Brewer says the next step is to apply for the grant.
