BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Leland has made some changes in its recycling program for the 2020-21 fiscal year.
The town announced that as of Wednesday, it will be transitioning to collecting recycle items from twice a month to once a month.
Spokeswoman Hilary Snow said the town’s recycle company, GFL Environment, Inc. has been experiencing an increase in cost, which has impacted the town.
Snow said the industry has changed within the past few years, so this adjustment is neccessary.
“It’s just a conversation that municipalities are having across the region, across the state, across the country unfortunately,” Snow said. “And it has to do with the cost of recycling when balanced with how impactful it may or may not be effective for the environment.”
Snow said residents who need an additional bin can secure one directly through the town’s recycling company for a monthly fee of $6.75 or an annual fee of $81.
