NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Firework sales are booming right now and it could have a lot to do with this year’s canceled or postponed shows.

We are less than 24 hours away from one of the biggest holidays of the summer, the 4th of July, and some are ready to enjoy it.

“We should celebrate now just to keep our spirits up. I mean the whole world is going through it,” Resident Erin Peterson said.

Some may still choose to celebrate in small groups. Wendy Giannini-King with the Wilmington Fire Department said there is one thing people should keep in mind when wearing masks while handling fireworks.

“Face masks is an extension of your clothing, is like the simplified definition, and it is potentially flammable, so if a spark from the firework were to hit that mask, you may have a whole different set of problems instead of just a topical burn,” King said. “It may be something deeper.”

Resident Grey Massa said though there will not be any nearby firework shows this year, he is looking forward to trying out new fireworks and spending some much needed time with his family.

“And just enjoying the weekend obviously a little bit of a break from work, so and we got some fireworks for the kids and I to have a great time,” Massa said.

Here is a reminder, not all fireworks are legal in North Carolina. Any fireworks that leave the ground are illegal.

That includes firecrackers, roman candles, skyrockets, and any other form that you can not control.
