WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — One local man is leaving more than footprints in the sand at Wrightsville Beach. He’s spreading a powerful message.

You may have seen scripture written in the sand by the Johnnie Mercers Fishing Pier.

Kirby, the man behind it, says it started because his wife enjoyed writing “Jesus loves you” in the sand.

For the last year and a half, Kirby and his family have left words in the sand to give people hope.

“We listen to the scriptures and sometimes the night before the Lord will put something on my heart to put out here, mostly to encourage the people and to share with them the things that are coming,” he said. “So if we know what is coming, we can have peace in our hearts.”

After a life full of spreading the gospel, Kirby says this is the most powerful form of ministry he’s done.

“We’ve done a lot of ministry throughout the country, but this is different because people are coming to us and asking us questions about our faith, their experiences,” he said. “So it kind of breaks down that uncomfortable barrier.”

It’s a modern way to spread a timeless message.

“We’re trying to take the scriptures and bring them down into our own language where we can give a short message and in this setting, it’s without a lot of distractions,” Kirby said. “With the sea, and the sun, and the pier looking down people can really meditate on these things.”
