Former voice of Washington ‘Redskins’ reacts to name change

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Washington NFL franchise announced Monday that it will drop the “Redskins” name and Indian head logo immediately. The man who called the action from the sidelines for more than two decades is speaking out about the changes.

Frank Herzog, who lives in Leland, was the radio play-by-play voice of the Washington Redskins for 26 years from 1979-2004. He says he can remember back in the 1990’s when there was another big push for the team to change their name.

Now year later, that change is actually being made. Herzog says it didn’t surprise him that organization decided it was time to move on.

“I’m not surprised that they changed the name,” Herzog said. “I think that was inevitable and I think the pressure was put on by DC’s mayor who said they couldn’t ever move the team into Washington D.C. with the name Redskins. Then I think the killer was FedEx saying no, no more and we’ll pull our name off the stadium.”

The Washington Football Club is expected to release its new team name in the coming weeks.
