Mother accused of tossing baby in trash can appears in court

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The New Hanover County mother accused of tossing her baby into a trash can made her first court appearance on Monday.

On Fairview Drive in Wilmington Thursday afternoon, a baby was discovered by a woman who was walking her dog in the area and heard his cries. She took quick action and called 911, saving his life.

On Saturday, Wilmington police announced they had identified Maryuri Calix-Macedo as the mother and charged her with attempted murder.

Calix-Macedo appeared in court by video conference on Monday and used an interpreter to ask for a court appointed attorney. District Attorney Ben David says she will be represented by public defender Jennifer Harjo.

There was no new information released about the case and there was no change in her $800,000 secured bond.

Her next court appearances is on August 6.
