HALLSBORO, NC (WWAY) — A Columbus County man is accused of stabbing another man at the Sam’s Pit Stop in Hallsboro on New Year’s Day.
Shortly before 2:30 pm, the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the Sam’s Pit Stop on Sam Potts Highway. When they arrived, Lake Waccamaw Police Department was on scene treating the victim, 30-year-old Bradley Joseph Martin, for stab wounds.
The sheriff’s office then took over the investigation.
From witness statements and surveillance footage, the CCSO criminal investigator was able to identify two suspects and a suspect vehicle. The investigation revealed that the victim was sitting inside of his car at Sam’s Pit Stop when he was approached by one of the suspects, James Levi Clewis, 29, of Chadbourn.
Clewis reportedly hit Martin in the face while he was still inside of his car. When Martin got out, authorities say Clewis continued assaulting him.
During the attack, Martin was reportedly stabbed and sustained cuts to his chest, arm and leg. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Clewis also sustained injuries to his hand that required medical treatment, according to CCSO.
Clewis was arrested and charged with felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury.
When being processing into the jail, a detention officer found a cigarette box containing cigarettes and Suboxone strips hidden inside of Clewis’ buttocks, according to CCSO.
Clewis was charged with felony Possession of a Controlled Substance on Jail Premises and misdemeanor Possession of Tobacco by an Inmate.
He received a $63,500 secured bond.
The investigation is ongoing.
