NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WCTI) — Taxes for property owners in the Town of North Topsail Beach could potentially double if a solution isn’t figured out by the county and the city on who is going to help fund the federal beach renourishment project.
Town Manager Dave Gilbride says that unless the county is going to help offset this $150 million project, the town may have no other option.
“Onslow County turned a blind eye to this cash cow out here,” said resident Stuart Gilman.
The cash cow Stuart Gilman is referring to is the occupancy tax the county collects from tourists and renters.
Leonard Fitzwater feels the same way. He owns a house on the shoreline.
“As a matter of fact, I pay Onslow County twice,” he said. “I believe it’s about 6 percent of my income goes right to their pockets.”
Now, there’s a chance property taxes could more than double.
