WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Schools are out for summer, temperatures are increasing, and now, summer camps are filling up.
Camp directors said after more than a year of social distancing, kids are ready to spend more time with friends, and many camps have been filling up since March.
After posting about their four weeks of summer camp this year, Austin Adams said his camp, Cape Fear Adventure filled up in just three weeks.
“Then we quickly got a waitlist,” said Adams. “We had 30 or so people on the waitlist. So we added another week of camp, and it sold out in about two days.”
The popular camp takes kids crabbing, kayaking, and to the beach, putting an emphasis on exploring the outdoors.
“It’s just meant to send the kids outside and send them home super tired and super salty every day,” Adams explained.
Cape Fear Adventure is just one of countless camps in our area seeing a huge increase in campers.
Primrose School of Wilmington says its elementary school summer camps take an educational approach.
“Every week, we try to have a good blend of field trips, and then really interesting STEM activities to do here,” said director, Meghan Gilbert.
Primrose only has a limited openings left over the 10 weeks of camp. Gilbert said she’s seen an increase in daycare applications as well, something she thought would help kids get back to normal.
“We definitely think it’s helpful for kids to be around other children,” Gilbert explained. “I think it was a long hard summer for both parents and children. So I think kids are ready to get out there and do some activities and being in a small group of something like 15 I think can help walk that line between still staying safe while getting the social interaction they need.”
And with loosened COVID measures, many parents in need of a break are taking advantage of camps they may not have tried before.
According to Adams, “I think they also, just, things that people have put off in the past, they’re like, we’re doing it right now. We’re not going to put it off anymore.”
Camps like Port City Gymnastics and FAST summer camp still have limited openings, after adding additional slots and weeks. They along with Primrose will have different themes each week.
