Wilmington Police and NHSO team up for national night out at Independence Mall

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — On Wednesday night in New Hanover County, the sheriff’s office and the Wilmington Police Department invited the community to enjoy a night of fun at Independence Mall.

The agencies teamed up for the free national night out event.

There were games and giveaways, booths showing off drones and other equipment, police horses, dogs, and more.

There was also a dunk tank, with Sheriff Ed McMahon taking his fair share of dips.

Organizers say the goal is to connect with the community in a fun and friendly way.

“It’s been a lot of families here, we had a little girl come out and she was dressed like a police officer,” said Letecia Holiday with WPD. “So it’s good to know that everyone don’t think that we’re evil and that we’re here to cause harm. It’s good to know that people feel like we are good and are still happy to support us.”

The Wilmington Fire Department and NC Wildlife officers also took part.

The event was held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
