Scott Dean joined WWAY as chief meteorologist in August 2014. A UNCW alum, he is excited to be back in the Port City. He began his career at WHIO in Dayton, OH, where he worked initially as the evening weekend meteorologist until he was promoted to the position of weekday morning meteorologist. While in Dayton, he was part of the team awarded an Emmy for exclusive live aerial coverage during the aftermath of the 2000 Xenia, OH, F4 tornado. Scott joined WTVD in Durham in the summer of 2007 as weekend evening meteorologist. Scott has had lots of experience covering major weather events across the state. At WTVD, he was the only meteorologist in the Raleigh-Durham market to report on site at the coast during hurricanes Earl, Irene and Sandy, and he was the sole local provider of live updates to New York City, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and other major markets. He also provided critical, life-saving information for five hours of uninterrupted live coverage during the historic April 16, 2011, deadly tornado outbreak in North Carolina. Scott is a proud native of North Carolina. He was born in Burlington and spent his early school years in Raleigh before moving to Williamsburg, VA, where he finished high school. Scott graduated with a business degree from UNC Wilmington in 1989, but decided that he really wanted to pursue his lifelong interest in weather. He attended NC State University, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Meteorology in 1998. While at NC State, Scott enrolled as an intern at WRAL in Raleigh where he decided to concentrate in the field of broadcasting. Scott is a member of the American Meteorological Society, and has been awarded its broadcasting seal. He was also part of a team that received the 2000, 2003, 2005 and 2006 Associated Press Award for Outstanding Weather Operation in the states of Ohio and West Virginia. When he is not following daily changes in the weather or "chasing storms," Scott enjoys many interests, including golf, fly fishing, cycling and cooking. Scott and his wife love to travel and to spend time outdoors in their spare time. He is eagerly looking forward to calling Wilmington home once again, and especially excited to make new friends and meet viewers.
