Chess master Bobby Fischer dead at 64

REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) — Reclusive chess master Bobby Fischer has died.

He was 64.

A spokesman says Fischer died yesterday at a hospital in Iceland. There is no word on the cause of his death.

Born in Chicago and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Fischer was a U.S. chess champion by the time he was 14 and a grand master at 15.

In 1972, he became an icon of the Cold War when he dethroned the Soviet Union’s Boris Spassky to become world champion.

Fischer had become a fierce critic of the U.S. He was wanted by the law in 1992 after he played a rematch against Spassky in Yugoslavia in violation of international sanctions.

Fischer eventually renounced his U.S. citizenship and moved to Iceland in 2005.
