NC school launches program to help pay for college

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A North Carolina university is launching a program designed to offer financial and academic aid which will help eligible students graduate with little or no debt.

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is starting the UNCG Guarantee. The first scholars in the program will begin in fall 2010. It is being created through UNCG’s $6 million gift from an anonymous donor who in 2009 gave gifts to several American universities.

Phase One of the program will provide support for 30 to 40 first-year students. With current resources, it is expected that the program can initially fund up to 140 scholars over four years.

The UNCG Guarantee is modeled after the Carolina Covenant at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which was launched in 2003. N.C. State has a similar program.
