NC-based Marines leave Haiti on Middle East duties

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Thousands of North Carolina-based Marines are leaving Haiti after helping with emergency aid efforts in Haiti.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reported Tuesday that the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and its Navy ships are leaving for the Middle East.

The unit was about to leave Camp Lejeune last month on a routine seven-month deployment before receiving orders to divert to the Caribbean nation after it was hit by a devastating earthquake.

The Marines helped aid groups deliver food and also helped build a medical center in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.

Nearly 5,000 Marines belonging to Camp Lejeune’s 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit will remain off the Haitian coast and continue humanitarian efforts.
