NC-based soldier charged with sexual assault

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — A North Carolina-based soldier has been charged with two burglaries and a sexual assault at Fort Bragg, one of a series of seven attacks on women in their Fayetteville area
homes since June.

The Fayetteville Observer reported Tuesday that Army investigators charged 22-year-old Spc. Aaron M. Pernell of Tulsa, Okla., in the crimes reported in December. Pernell is not charged in any of the other sexual attacks, which Fayetteville police did not disclose until last month.

Fayetteville police say the attacks appear similar because in each case an intruder broke into an apartment or condominium at night or early in the morning.

The Army’s Criminal Investigations Command says its agents are working closely with police in Fayetteville and elsewhere.
