Cape Fear Public Utility Authority staff estimate nearly 44,000 gallons of untreated wastewater was discharged into Barnards Creek, a tributary of the Cape Fear River, Monday afternoon.

The North Carolina Division of Water Quality has fined the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority for a sewage spill back in January.

CFPUA responds to major sewer spill

A CFPUA spokesperson says they will hold off on estimating how many gallons of sewage spilled until they can get a more accurate idea. But Jim Gregson, director of the N.C. Division of Water Quality's Wilmington office, told the StarNews that based upon the average flow in the line and the amount of time it was leaking, up to 1.4 million gallons could have escaped into the New Hanover County tidal creek.
