A powerful earthquake struck New Zealand's South Island early Monday, killing at least two people, damaging buildings and infrastructure, and prompting emergency services to warn people along the coast to move to higher ground to avoid tsunami waves.

While the devastation in New Zealand seems so far from home for most of us, one UNC Wilmington student is in the center of it. WWAY's Asha Davé spoke with her via skype this afternoon, and while they were talking, a tremor shook her room.

A UNCW spokesperson tells us the university has six students studying abroad in New Zealand. Five are on the north island in locations that are safe from any damage caused by Monday's earthquake. One student, though, is studying at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, where the earthquake hit.
