WWAY’s weekend sports recap

One area high school team won a state title on Saturday. Several other high school squads had their state title dreams crushed. Congratulations to the Wilmington Christian Acadeny volleyball squad for back to back state titles in volleyball. The Landfall Tradition is over. Wake Forest won with a record setting performance. UNCW won their home regular season finale on Saturday in men's soccer. The Seahawks are back in first place in the CAA. Plus more!

Purdue leads after first day of Landfall Tradition

videoTwo-time champion Purdue shot a blistering 5-under-par 283 and South Carolina's Nanna Madsen soared to the top of the individual leaderboard with a 6-under 66 as the opening day of the 13th Landfall Tradition drew to a close Friday at the Country Club of Landfall's Pete Dye Course. The conditions were perfect. The greens were true and fast. The scores were lower than normal.

Four local teams advance in volleyball state playoffs; New Hanover wins league soccer title

videoHoggard, Pender, South Columbus and Wilmington Christian all won state playoff volleyball games on Thursday night. Odds are we'll have at least one state champion from the area this year. On Thursday New Hanover won the boys soccer crown for the Mideastern Conference. We were there for that too. Plus, the Landfall Tradition tees off on Friday. Prior to the event we caught up with UNCW Seahawk golfer Kayla Thompson. The UNCW freshman is a graduate of West Bladen High.

videoWe like to catch up with area athletes when they move onto the ACC. We did that on Sunday in regard to former South Columbus Stallion Pharoah McKever who is now a freshman at NC State. The UNCW women's soccer team earned a spot in the CAA tourney on Sunday. Alabama won the Landfall Tradition. The World Series is tied at 2. Boston won 4-2 in game 4 over St.Louis. Plus more!

Alabama secures Landfall Tradition title

videoThe University of Alabama excels in more than just football. Add women's golf to the list as well. Alabama led from wire to wire at this weekend's Landfall Tradition. The Crimson Tide captured first place followed by Duke and Clemson in the women's golf event.

Alabama out front at Landfall Tradition

Alabama has a ten shot lead following the first day of play at The Landfall Tradition at the Country Club of Landfall. 18 of the top collegiate women's teams in the country are competing in the annual golf event, including six ACC schools and UNCW.
