SC AG: New ‘I Believe’ license plates are legal

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – South Carolina drivers might be able to buy a license plate with the words “I Believe” after all.

A plate that reads www.IBELIEVEsc.net is under review at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Attorney General Henry McMaster says the plate designed by a nonprofit group is legal. That opinion comes nine months after a federal judge barred the state from making legislatively approved plates with the religious message.

The nonprofit group’s new name is the Web site address. It applied for the plates in February under state law that allows private groups to create specialty plates.

Americans United for Separation of Church and State sued to stop production of the legislatively created plates, which featured a cross and a stained glass window.
