Every time our region suffers a fire, hurricane or other disaster, the Red Cross is on the way. This year the Cape Fear chapter celebrates a milestone: its one-hundredth anniversary. From disaster relief, to blood donations, the local chapter has left its mark.

Thursday marks one-year Ernesto anniversary

Tropical Storm Ernesto hit our area nearly one year ago today. The effects of the storm are still being felt. After Tropical Storm Ernesto, many parts of Pender County were covered in four feet of standing water. Several residents hoped changes would be made to prevent future flooding along the Cape Fear River.

Some Katrina evacuees stay in Wilmington

videoIt is two years after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and the scars remain. Some Big Easy residents still haven't gone home. One victim of the storm relocated here and hasn't gone back. Katrina evacuee Daniel Aiena thought he would only be at Wrightsville Beach for a short time. Instead, the stay may be permanent.

CFCC students make bio-fuel

If you're tired of paying at the pump, Cape Fear Community College may have come up with a way to cut some of the costs and help the environment at the same time. Made right in the college's labs by faculty and students, the bio-fuel burns cleaner than diesel.

The wait will soon be over for those looking for a more environmentally friendly fuel. By noon Friday bio-diesel will be available in our area. It's an eco-friendly fuel for eco-minded drivers. It's called B20, a special blend of 20 percent bio-diesel and 80 percent petroleum diesel.
