Stoke swells for local surfers as Danielle looms

Surfers are looking forward to possible big swells from Danielle. The National Hurricane Center says it could regain strength over the next couple days.

Local surfers are crossing their fingers because they say it’s been a pretty slow summer.

“It’s going to be the second long-period ground swell of the season,” says Ben Kearns. “It’s going to be coming on a weekend so everybody doesn’t have to take the day off work, take some sick time. It’s going to start Saturday, push into Sunday, maybe a little into Monday depending on the track. I’m stoked because all of us have kind of had a kind of slow season so this is going to be great.”

Big swells could mean dangerous rip currents for swimmers. If you see red flags on the lifeguard stands, stay out of the water. Wrightsville Beach lifeguards have made about 300 rescues this summer.
