Local swimmer making a big splash on national scene

READ MORE: Local swimmer making a big splash on national scene

Travis Johns is a freshman at Laney High School. He's a phenomenal swimmer, and unlike Michael Jordan, Travis did not have any difficulty making the varsity team at Laney.

But Travis Johns is not content with being on a roster. He's not only one of the state's best swimmers, he's one of the top swimmers in his age group in the nation.

Nothing comes easy in swimming. The sport requires an enormous amount of dedication and training. Long hours in the pool are the norm.

Travis is a member of the Waves of Wilmington swim team and while he just turned 15 years old, he already has his sights set on college; he'd like to be able to swim collegiately at the University of Texas.

** UPDATE: FEBRUARY 11, 2012 - Travis Johns captured the state 4-A title for high school swimming in the 200 IM on February 11th.

And now

Now to make sure there is socioeconomic diversity we will send Travis to a school where a non-swimmer can "...feed on each other..." as DeShields wants.

Oops, should not have brought attention to a student doing well. Now he will have to be transferred to a school that doesn't do so well. Maybe a non-swimmer can "feed off him" to quote Dorothy Deshields.

Good job travis. Keep it up.

Good job travis. Keep it up. Follow your dreams.
