ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WWAY) -- There's a new sheriff in Bladen County. Sort of. Bladen County commissioners appointed a former sheriff to lead the department until the November election.

Former Sheriff Earl Storms will take over as interim sheriff. Storms will fill in for Sheriff Steve Bunn, who retired Wednesday before the end of his term. Storms served as Bladen County Sheriff from 1976 until 1994.

"The only thing that i can promise is to be fair, honest, and uphold the law laid down by the courts," Storms said.

Storms, who will be officially sworn in Tuesday, will take over until a new sheriff is elected in November. Democrat Prentis Benston and unaffiliated candidate Billy Ward are running for the position.
