Brunswick Commissioner making sure to spend discretionary money

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) - Brunswick County Commissioners felt some heat last month after residents found out many were getting compensated above and beyond their salaries to attend "meetings". There had never been a formal policy in place to define what a meeting was until September 21st when commissioners put new rules into place.

Commissioners also decided to do away with a "discretionary fund" they got each budget year. But it appears that fund won't formally go away until the next budget year. Commissioner Marty Cooke placed this line item on tonight's meeting agenda,

"Commissioner Cooke requests approval to provide $250 from his discretionary account balance to the Brunswick County Master Gardeners Association to support Justin Simmons and Bryan Simmons attendance at the National Junior Horticulture Association annual meeting in Cleveland, Ohio on October 6-11, 2010."

The spending will continue as long as the current comissioners are in charge. From day one Scott Phillips has stood his ground about all the extra tax dollars that they get for ( Attending a funeral, meetings on the phone, etc.). They make more money than some of them poor women that work at the complex, that are trying to support their families on a lot less. It is time to get rid of the garbage down there and get some new blood in office.

Wow marty how generous $250.00 your such a big spender you would NEVER get my vote no matter what you try to do!

Politics as usual. They are probably hoping the voters will forget about this issue by the next budget year, and then they can double down on their self payments. These commissioners need to be voted out of office.

Does anyone know how the Commissioners voted on Monday night? Did they vote to give away more of our tax dollars for another boondogle and so that they can buy more votes with our tax dollars.
