Southport sign rules up for debate tonight

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) -- The debate about what can go on sidewalks in front of business continues tonight in Southport. The city's planning board has a public meeting tonight about the rules.

For months city leaders and businesses have squared off over an ordinance already on the books that bans signs, benches and other items from public sidewalks. Owners argue those things enhance their businesses.

The meeting starts at 6 p.m. in the Aldermen Chambers at City Hall.

As long as the signs are tasteful and not impeding traffic, I think they are fine to have. I am a Southport citizen and without them I would not know about sales, specials, or even openings of new businesses. As a tourist area, I think the signs do a great job of letting the public see what Southport has to offer.
Common sense should prevail.
