IRS offers free help for qualifying taxpayers

WILMINGTON, NC (NEWS RELEASE) -- Taxpayers around the Wilmington region may want to take advantage of special Saturday hours scheduled 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 29 and Feb. 5 at the Wilmington IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center located at 3340 Jaeckle Drive.

Free tax preparation and electronic filing is available for taxpayers who earned less than $49,000 in 2010.

The IRS is placing special emphasis on taxpayers who may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit. Taxpayers who earned less than $49,000 in 2010 may be eligible for a tax credit of up to about $5,700. Last year, the average EITC claimed was $2,200.

Qualifying taxpayers can get assistance Monday through Friday during normal business hours at the Charlotte IRS TAC. Taxpayers may also want to take advantage of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. VITA sites feature IRS-trained volunteers who help prepare and e-file returns free of charge. To find the nearest VITA site, call (800) 906-9887. VITA site hours vary by location.
