Well-known attorneys to assist Perdue in probe

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- Two well-known defense attorneys are helping Gov. Beverly Perdue as a prosecutor scrutinizes her 2008 campaign spending.

The News & Observer of Raleigh says Perdue hired Joe Cheshire and Wade Smith. A statement from Cheshire on Thursday said the two would answer questions Perdue might have following reports that her campaign was under a criminal investigation.

Last October, Perdue announced federal authorities were investigating her campaign. A Wake County prosecutor also had questions about campaign airline flights.

Cheshire told the newspaper that he and Smith don't believe Perdue did anything wrong or was the subject of any investigation.

Cheshire did not return a phone message from The Associated Press. Perdue spokeswoman Chrissy Pearson declined comment.

The StarNews of Wilmington first reported Tuesday that Cheshire was assisting Perdue in an unspecified matter.
