BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Navassa's mayor says he had no idea he's no longer under state investigation.
In October, then-District Attorney Rex Gore called for an investigation of Navassa Mayor Eulis Willis. The investigation, first reported by The Local News Review and WWAY, questioned whether Willis forged signatures on an easement document.
District Attorney Jon David says in December Gore determined no charges should be filed, and the SBI agreed.
"One of the things I feel strongly about is that cases in the criminal justice system need to have a sense of penalty to them, and I will not disturb an earlier finding by Rex Gore unless I determine there's been abusive discretion or unless justice requires me to look back in a matter," David said.
Mayor Willis did not want to go on camera, but he said he's rarely been informed of the status of his investigation. He said he still has received no official confirmation it's over.
