Missing Charlotte woman's body found in river

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) -- The body of a Charlotte woman missing for nearly three months has been found floating in the Catawba River about a mile downstream from where her sports utility vehicle was found.

Clothes on the body matched those that 56-year-old Janet Smith was wearing when she vanished Dec. 5 in western Mecklenburg County. Police later confirmed the body was Simpson. She was last seen having breakfast at a restaurant.

Relatives reported her missing when she didn't arrive at work the next day at a Bank of Granite branch in Charlotte.

Police found Simpson's SUV on a street near the river. A neighbor reported seeing a man in the SUV on Dec. 6. She told police he drove off, but returned the next day, parked the SUV and left.
