Goolsby wants US 17 renamed to honor Marines at cost of $100k

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Sen. Thom Goolsby (R-9th District) has sponsored a bill in the state Senate to designate US 17 as US Marine Corps Highway. The bill calls for $100,000 of Department of Transportation funds be allocated to pay for signage for the road.

The bill calls for the entire highway, which hugs the coast from the Virginia state line to the South Carolina state line and passes through Camp Lejeune, receive the name.

Goolsby, a Marine Corps veteran who represents New Hanover County, is sponsoring the bill with fellow Republican senators Harry Brown, who represents Onlsow and Jones counties, and Jean Preston, who serves Carteret, Craven and Pamlico counties.

At least its not another road for MLK.

Come on? Really? 100K during a recession to change signs? This is a great idea. It really is, but why do we have to do it during this financial mess? I honestly can't take this anymore. Every election you hope for new leadership and always end up with the same thing..a politician. It's very depressing.

This is an idiotic idea. Utterly foolish!

In these financially-straightened times we do not need to spend more DOT funds renaming a highway.

If any money is to be spent, it should be spent on repairs or landscaping.

Thom your already doing dumb stuff and just got in office. Is this what we have to look forward too..

there's already a stretch of road in Jacksonville honoring the Marine Corps. Not to take anything away from the Corps., but wouldn't this 100k be better used to fix the roads instead of "fixing" the name of the road?

I totally agree,,and the cross county trail??? fix the roads first

This is good spending but all of the improvements Wilmington asked for isn't? Hypocrite!

How many signs do you need? 100k? Wow.
