WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The North Carolina triathlon season has officially begun. This year's Azalea Triathlon kicked off the season on Saturday.
The first batch of swimmers jumped in the pool at UNCW at 8:00am. After the 300 yard swim, the athletes hopped on their bikes for a 10 mile ride around campus and finished up with a 5K.
Matt Wisthoff finished first and said the Azalea Triathlon is a great, quick race to start the tri season. "I've been training pretty hard. You get the work done in training, and then the race isn't as bad as you think it would be. Feel pretty good. Tired, definitely tired, but I feel good."
Wisthoff encourages everyone interested in trying out a tri to just go for it. He says chances are, you'll be hooked after your first race. Wisthoff finished the race in less than 45 minutes.
