FIRST ON 3: Leland councilman charged with domestic assault


LELAND, NC (WWAY) -- Leland Police arrested a Leland Town Councilman over the weekend for domestic violence.

In a news release, Leland Police Chief Tim Jayne said officers responded to a domestic violence call Saturday. Shortly after speaking with the victim police located the suspect and arrested Herbert Barnes.

Barnes is in the Brunswick County Jail. He is charged with assault on a female/domestic assault.

He is scheduled to be back in court April 18.

Leland Councilman case continued

I cannot for the life of me understand why my personal life is of interest to WWAY. I am trying to get on with my life, but I can't when everytime I turn on the TV, I see my picture along with all the gory details of of an alleged incident. Why not wait until a verdict is rendered before you skewer me again. I continue to try and represent the citizens of Leland in an honorable manner, and your news won't allow me to do this. I am suffering enough without you piling on.

...because if we could've gotten him and Jason Thompson from the New Hanover County Commission together in the same room, we coulda had the bout of the century! One would've had to walk away sporting "depends" under their shawts though...
