CAROLINA SHORES, NC (WWAY) -- Crews have contained a wildfire in southern Brunswick County. Emergency Management said the fire started in South Carolina and crossed the state line near Carolina Shores on Boundaryline Drive.
Firefighters say a shift in the wind helped drive the flames back. Still dozens of homes were in danger, as crews used plows and a helicopter to drop water.
On the South Carolina side of the fire, WPDE-TV in Myrtle Beach reports a Red Cross shelter is now open for people having to leave their homes due to a brush fire in the Little River area.
Forestry planes are circling the area to provide tactical support to ground crews by dropping water on the fire.
The Coastal South Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross opened a shelter at Anchor Baptist Church in Little River. The church is located at 3300 Highway 50.
At this time, 20 to 30 homes are being evacuated.
