WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- New Hanover County Sheriff's detectives are still searching for an answer to a possible murder. Michael Lamar Smith was found shot to death in a Monkey Junction parking lot yesterday.

Deputies are investigating his death, but we wanted to investigate his life.

We know Smith grew up in Wilmington and spent his childhood in New Hanover County Schools. Smith graduated from Hoggard High School in 1995. We visited the school today to talk to faculty or staff who may have known smith.

Principal Dave Spencer was a teacher and coach while Smith was at Hoggard. He didn't want to speak on camera, but he said he remembers smith as a polite young man, who was an excellent student.

Hoggard High's 1995 yearbook pictures Smith as a young man who enjoyed science. His Facebook page suggests he was into "anything involving nature" and "hiking."

New Hanover County Sheriff's spokesman Cpl. Jerry Brewer told us Smith's body is with medical examiners. He said detectives are working around the clock to figure out what happened.

Spencer said his thoughts and prayers are with Smith's family.

We also tried reaching out to Smith's friends, but have gotten no response so far.

So Mr. Dave Spencer -- is this what happens to excellent students?

I'm sorry he's gone, but let's cut the crap about him being a model citizen.

I have to say that no matter what the day was bringing Mike would always make you laugh in the halls of Myrtle Grove Middle School on up into Hoggard High School! He was an amazing person and it is a shame that this has happened to him! Mike you will be missed but never forgotten!!!!!!!

I JUST WANTED TO GIVE MY DEEPEST REGARDS AND SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY, AS I LOST MY SON TO A HEART ATTACK IN 1995, AND IT SO HAPPENS THEY GRADUATED FROM SAME SCHOOL,SAME YEAR.
